Yes, this is the cellar of our 100+ year old farmhouse pictured below. It worked pretty well for starting out all my plants. I will say the cellar stairs about killed me come transplant time. They are narrow and you need to do the limbo so you do not bump your head on the beam on the way up and down. Over 200 plants were started down there last year! Not bad for someone that had absolutely no idea what she was doing. What is that Nike slogan?...Just Do It. The only thing that did not come up were the ground cherries my husband wanted so badly. Everything else went nuts.
There were 4 different Hybrid and 2 different Heirloom types of tomatoes planted. The Heirlooms produced the best. I will have to add though that everyone in this northern Illinois area that I spoke to had bad tomato year due to the cold and wet weather.
I planted 3 different Hybrid peppers and 2 Heirloom types. They all got a late start producing again due to the weather. However, I have 40+ quart bags of chopped frozen peppers in my freezer. Not bad. I did have a Hot Lemon Pepper that was planted so I could make hot dill pickles but they did not produce til' long after my cucumbers were done. That was a good thing. The peppers ended up to be so hot I thought I was going to die when trying them. They took my breath away and sent me vomiting to my kitchen sink for a 1/2 hour afterwards.
I did 2 Hybrid cabbages and 1 Heirloom variety. They all did outstanding!
I did 2 Heirloom variety eggplant and again, due to the weather, they did not begin producing until late and we only had enough for a couple meals.
My daughter planted a couple flats of flowers that included geraniums, impatiens and moss roses. They all did great. I will plant those in January instead of February next year to get earlier blooms. The moss roses looked to have been dead when planted but then took off and were unbelievable. She planted those for my late Dad who loved them.
Hybrid broccoli and cauliflower were also started and did quite well.
